Development & Extension of Sericulture in Bangladesh

 

Five year (2001-2006) development project for the development & extension of sericulture in Bangladesh had started on July, 2001 and was stipulated to be completed on June, 2006. But the project cost was TK. 1654.50 lakh, approved by the ECNEC on 24.03.2003 for extension of sericulture in 164 Sericulture Extension Supervisor's Officer/Sub centres under 40 Upazilla sericulture extension offices, development of 10 sericulture nurseries. 2 nos P-3  stations, 7 mulberry gardens, 12 Minifilatures and continuation of Research and Training programme of Bangladesh Sericulture Research & Training Institute (BSRTI). Considering its recurring nature government had decided to implement the project from Revenue Budget instead of Development budget . The project period was extended from June/06 to December/06 and it was completed on 31st Decemver, 2006.

                      I.     Objectives:

a)    To  increase  production  of  mulberry  sapling  and  to  supply these to the farmers at subsidized price .

b)    Production  of   DFLs  in  the  nurseries  and supply   to   the
farmers/rearers in a reasonable price .

c)    To  establish  Chawki  Rearing Centres in  extension  areas  to supply Chawki silk  worm  to  the  rearers for getting stable & quality cocoons.

d)    To transfer appropriate & effective technologies approved  by BSRTI for mulberry cultivation, silk worm rearing & reeling in the field level of extension area.

e)    To organize  training  for the  professionals engaged in  various segments of sericulture.

 

                   II.   Major Activities:

a)     Maintenance  of  477 bighas of land  of  7 Nurseries  &  P- 3 station.

b)     75.00  lakhs  of  mulberry  saplings  will  be   produced   and distributed among the farmers.

c)     38.000kg  of  seed  cocoons / 75.00  lakhs  of  DFLs  will  be produced  and   distributed  among  the  farmers  as  per  their demand.

d)     Training of 1800 farmers will be imparted.

e)     Continuation  of  33  research  projects,  maintenance  of  55  mulberry varieties & 53 silk worm races in the BSRTI.

f)     34 number of Chawki rearing centers will be established.

g)     75,000 kg silk cocoons  will  be purchased  & processed in 12 Minifilatures.

 

         III.          Achievements of the project (Up to  June, 2006)

a)   48.61  lakhs  of  saplings  produced  &  distributed  among  the farmers.

b)   18.00 lakh  of  DFLs  produced  and  distributed among the farmers as per their demand.

c)   1800  persons  were  trained  in  different  segments  of sericulture.

d)   25 numbers of Chawki Centres were established &  started functioning.

e)    73000 kgs of silk cocoons were purchased  & processed in  12 Minifilatures.

f)    Employment  for 50,000  rural poverty stricken people have been possible by this project.

g)   7 Nurseries and  477  bighas  of  mulberry  land  have  been maintained under this project.

h)  Ralies/ Assemblies were held in different places in thecountry such as Bholahat, Mirgonj, Rajshahi, Thakurgaon.
